Thank you for the reminder, Patrice, that a lot of strides have been made. A lot of work was done by earlier generations.

I'm Gen X. The red-headed step-child stuck in the middle between the Boomes and the Y-ers! Growing up I had very similar attitudes as some of the young women today...if I am individualistic and don't identify with any particular movement or "word" but I just continue to do amazing work then nothing will ever burst my beautiful equality bubble. I graduated valedictorian from college and went to graduate school. Safe as kittens right? It unfortunately doesn't work that way. So I'm glad there are young women who understand that feminism is still an issue to be addressed. It doesn't have to be done in any particular fashion - it can be done your way. Your generation's way. It is just about acknowledging that sexism exists and being willing to do your part - whatever that is - to change it. You don't have to start a protest or a blog but reading a blog is a good start.

I'm glad I opened my eyes when I did...I'll say I'm much better off. But just because you "don't believe" in something (like sexism) doesn't mean it isn't happening. These young women are being discriminated against here in the US and women all over the world are as well. The thing is that when you open your eyes you become responsible for doing something about it and I think that is a large part of the denial. But if in your own life you choose not to see something that is actually happening you will get railroaded - I see it happening to a lot of my friends in the choice of man they marry - not just in the amount of money they decide to take at a job. There's a hefty price for ignorance.

It's not a non-issue but I think it takes a lot of communication/trust/honesty to get past things like that... but i would say any relationship requires communication/trust/honesty anyway..

This article is an excellent deconstruction of Swift's producers' marketing strategies.

I tend to agree with Kate's comment above all else, though—the author hates Swift for being good at what she does. Swift is the scapegoat for a larger dissatisfaction with many other things ...American pop culture, the music industry, mainstream ideologies, the author's own sense of self, just to name a possible few.

To sum it up, "don't shoot the messenger".

I just like reading profiles. I read them all the time. I don't think I could ever do online dating, but I have an unconstructed OKCupid account just so I can read about the ways people talk about themselves. It's creepy and voyeuristic, but hey, it makes for a nice break from work on occasion. Also, I'm creepy and voyeuristic.
